2018-2019 UM Debate Team Members
Sam Franz is from Traverse City, Michigan. He is a freshman who studies political theory. He regularly applies the sort of theoretical work that he finds interesting class to his debating style, prizing an acute yet technical style of debate.
Jacob Goldschlag is a junior studying political science. He debated for four years at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California before coming to Michigan. Jacob is also an assistant coach at Cypress Bay High School.
Jonah Jacobs is from Northbrook, Illinois and attended Glenbrook North High School. He’s a freshman majoring in Economics. Outside of debate, Jonah likes to read, lift weights, and spend time with friends.
Jesse Love is a junior in the school of LSA double majoring in political science and philosophy. He is the Vice President and Treasurer for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Delta Rho Chapter, the Political Actions Chair for the Black Student Union, and the head of the grants team for The Honey’s Home Foundation. After college Jesse wants to be a lobbyist for a teacher’s union and then go back to school to be a civil rights attorney.
Clare McGraw is a first-year student at Michigan. She went to Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, Utah. Clare is planning on majoring in International Studies and Political Science.
Allison Pujol is a first-year student from Coral Gables, Florida and attended the Carrollton School for the Sacred Heart. She is a Political Science major.
Brian Roche is originally from Glenview, IL and attended Glenbrook South High School. He’s a sophomore and political science major.
Christine Rogers is a Senior from Detroit, Michigan. She attended University Prep High School. Christine is studying Afro-American and African Studies.
Jacob Shelton is currently a junior studying business administration at Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. He’s originally from Alpharetta, Georgia and attended Chattahoochee High School. Outside of college debate, Jacob’s an assistant debate coach at Wayzata High School and a co-founding member of Analytics for Social Good. This past summer, he interned at a healthcare executive staffing firm in Georgia.
Ashton Smith grew up in Des Plaines, Illinois and attended Maine East High School. He’s a second-year student that plans on majoring in Public Policy. This is Ashton’s sixth year participating in the activity of policy debate, including high school.
Lukas Taylor is originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. He’s a sophomore planning on applying to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Sam Ungerleider is a sophomore pursuing a dual-degree in business and honors political science. He is originally from Midland, Michigan where he debated for H.H. Dow High School. Sam has been debating for Michigan since 2016.
Thomas Vance hails from College Park, Georgia. He is a freshman in the LSA Honors college. Thomas intends to study Political Science and African-American Studies. He is heavily involved in the Black Student Union and is passionate about social justice issues on Michigan’s campus.
Caitlin Walrath is from Salt Lake City, Utah. She is a junior and psychology major. Caitlin works for Notre Dame High School in California and at the Michigan Summer debate camp.
Hannah Wolfson is a first-year debater from Nashville, Tennessee. She attended the University School of Nashville and her major is undeclared.
Matt Zhu is a sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Hawken School and his major is undeclared.
